Spring and summer normally conjures up images of fun, sun and relaxation, but for many people it can also bring the misery of hay fever symptoms. As pollen levels soar, sneezing, a streaming nose, itching and tearful eyes can have a significant impact on quality of life.
However, there is a solution. A private Hay fever injection – no longer available on the NHS – could provide relief for sufferers.
Hay fever symptoms
If you’re sneezing, have a blocked or runny nose and itchy eyes around the same time each year (usually March to September) then you may be reacting to pollen from the grass or trees. If over-the-counter remedies like anti-histamine tablets, eye drops and nose sprays are not really helping, then it’s worth considering a Hay Fever injection.
The hay fever injection
The injection is offered to those who suffer inflammatory and allergic disorders such as hay fever. It is a steroid and usually given as a single 40mg dose, typically injected into the large muscles of the buttock. One dose provides season long relief.
It’s important to remember, though, that the injection is not 100% effective. It eases symptoms rather than completely removing them – making daily life and activities more bearable. Standard hay fever tablets, sprays and eye drops may still be required when the pollen count is particularly high. Some people may require a second injection for added protection.
Most people get relief within 1 to 3 days. It’s best to have the injection a few weeks before any symptoms occur and at the start of the season. Sufferers often know roughly what month they start to feel bad, so preventative action should be taken early for maximum effect.
Not everyone will be suitable for a Hay Fever injection. Our private GP will assess whether it is the right thing for you during an initial consultation. If you are not suitable, alternative options will be discussed.
If you’re medically safe to receive the injection, it will be given during your consultation and will only take a few minutes of your time. You’ll be totally safe to drive away after and carry on with whatever you were doing.
We offer a number of allergy tests to find the cause of any allergic problem, enabling you to avoid contact with particular items in the future.
